The Hidden High Plateau: Sourcing Our Matcha in Guizhou

When we first set out to source a new matcha for the Matcha Guru collection, we didn’t expect our journey to lead us deep into the misty, emerald-green peaks of Guizhou, China. Most people think of Uji or Nishio when they think of premium matcha, and while we love the classics, our palates were craving something a bit more... adventurous.
After trekking through multiple regions and tasting enough tea to keep a small city awake for a week, we arrived in the "Central Tea Mountain." What we found wasn’t just tea; it was a revelation.
There is an old local proverb that describes Guizhou as a place with "no three li of flat land, no three days of fine weather, and no three cents to rub together." While the "three cents" part is a thing of the ancient past, the weather and terrain are exactly why the matcha here is world-class.
The constant mist and high-altitude clouds provide a natural shading system. In Japan, farmers often use synthetic covers to shade the plants, but in Guizhou, the mountains do the work for us. This natural shade boosts the L-theanine and chlorophyll levels, resulting in a powder that is a vibrant, electric green with a creamy, umami-rich finish that rivals the best of Japan.
Our visit wasn't just about business; it was about the culture. We found ourselves in villages where tea isn't just a drink—it’s a social pillar. In the Dong ethnic areas, we experienced Gan Jin Tang, a tradition where communal tea drinking is followed by singing and dancing.
It turns out, when people are happy and the air is clean (Guizhou is famous for having some of the most unspoiled soil in China), the tea just tastes better. We tasted hundreds of cultivars—from the famous Duyun Maojian to the thick-leaved local varieties—until we found the one that made our eyes widen. It had that perfect balance: a silky texture, a hint of natural sweetness, and a vegetal "pop" that reminded us why we fell in love with matcha in the first place.
To give you a better idea of why this place is so special, here are a few things we learned while navigating the winding mountain roads:
Selecting our Guizhou matcha wasn’t just about the flavor—it was about the Vibrant Zen philosophy we strive for at Matcha Guru. We wanted a tea that was ethically sourced, incredibly pure, and possessed a unique "terroir" that you can't find anywhere else.
The result is a matcha that is bold enough for your morning latte but refined enough to be whisked traditionally. It’s a testament to the fact that sometimes, you have to go off the beaten path (and up a very steep mountain) to find true quality.
The Guru’s Note: Next time you open a tin of our matcha, take a deep breath. That fresh, grassy aroma isn't just tea—it’s the crisp air of the Guizhou highlands, captured in a fine powder.
Stay Vibrant,
Richard (The Matcha Guru)
